Book Review: Another Bullshit Night in Suck City: Nick Flynn

Great title; good book. This was a quick read but I don't recommend it if you're looking for something uplifting. This is the true story of a dude who works at a homeless shelter who gets to know his dad when he shows up looking for a bed. Of course that's a very brief synopsis and a lot more happens. Very creatively written. I didn't mind the depressing content or the unanswered questions about the way our communities provide for people in need because I wrestle with these questions all the time. I think I liked this book because it was comforting to agree with somebody about all the things that don't make sense and how to deal with that. I liked the beginning of this book better than the end where I felt like he got a bit rambley. Good book but not great.

Book Review: Deptford Trilogy: Robertson Davies

This book is actually a trilogy of books (duh, hence the title) and I had to bargain with myself to stick with it until I had at least finished the first book. I didn't even get that far. This book has everything I love in a book like magical realism, circus people, slightly secretive academic institutions and crazy people and yet none of it was interesting. It felt dated and I didn't like the way the first person narrative was written. I don't know. Disappointed with this one.

Bowie Bachman: 10 Months

At 10 months...

MILESTONES: Mom and Dad's birthdays, first May Day, first ear infection, 2nd top tooth, talking with his hands, sleeping through the night, kisses mom when asked to, eating more solids, staying up until 7pm at night
LIKES: Duck calls, being outside in the summer weather, driving toy cars (and saying vroom), the remote control, teething on the toilet (weird and I promise we don't encourage this behavior!), hummus, cuddling
DISLIKES: Snot suckers, being away from mom, peas

Here are some photos from my tenth month...

Grandma Julie's Methodaires concert.

Temper tantrum.

Mom and baby sickies.

We spent lots of time outside working on the yard.

For Dad's birthday we got seafood from Coastal Seafood and feasted.

Flowers for Mom's birthday.

There were lots of opportunities to party with baby friends.
